About Dr McDonald

Dr McDonald is a UK trained dermatologist, though initially from Northern Ireland, he is now based in London. He is interested in all aspects of dermatology, providing holistic care to both children and adults with skin problems. 

 

Dr McDonald studied for his medical degree at Queen's University, Belfast, during which time he was awarded the Dr. Henry Hutchinson-Stewart Medical Scholarship. Upon graduating, he undertook further training in to become a General Practitioner, during which time he successfully achieved his Diploma in Geriatric Medicine, Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists also achieving Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners with the top pass in Northern Ireland in his year. 

Subsequently, he worked as a GP locum and was made a Partner in a GP Practice, developing his holistic approach to consulting borne out of the understanding of the importance of assessing the impact of illness on the person. He subsequently achieved his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Diploma in Practical Dermatology, Diploma of the Faculty of Family Planning and Diploma in Occupational Medicine. 

Dr McDonald then moved to London, where he worked as a GP before re-entering training, initially in Bath before taking up a National Training Number for dermatology higher specialist training on the Royal Free Hospital London rotation. During this time he developed skills in all aspects of dermatology practice.

 

After completing his training he became a substantive consultant dermatologist at the Royal London Hospital, undertaking clinics in all aspects of dermatology such as lesion analysis, skin surgery, medical dermatology and paediatric dermatology. He is the paediatric dermatology lead at the Royal London Hospital and also set up the tertiary complex acne/hidradenitis suppurativa service. He also leads a multidisciplinary male genital dermatology service at Watford General Hospital.

He has presented at national and international conferences, as well as authored multiple articles. Additionally he has taken up further roles as a member of the Therapeutics and Guidelines committee, is Chair of the Access to Medicines Committee and is the Assistant Honorary Secretary of the British Association of Dermatologists.
